GM Affiliated Loan Company Accepts Public Funds. Changes Head

GMAC, a loan company affiliated with American auto giant General Motors announced today that it's chief officer, Ezra Merkin will resign. In December of last year, the U.S. Federal Reserve Board decided to inject personell as well as public funds into GMAC. In addition, with 6 officials to be named by the FRB by March 24th, the management ranks would recieve a complete make over.

GMAC retains 51% of Chrysler parent Cerebus and 49% of GM in stock. Financing for the automobile company amidst slumping sales has fell. Last December, the FRB approved the conversion from a corporate entity to a bank holding company, and announced the investment of $6,000,000,000 into the new company.

America's Boeing Lays Off 4,500 Due to Sudden Drop in Plane Orders

American Aircraft giant Boeing today announced that it would cut 4,500 personell from it's passenger aircraft division (equal to 7.5% cut) within the year. With orders dropping due to the worsening economy, the company decided that freelance, contracted and fulltime employees would be laid off.

Boeing announced a drop of 53% (662 planes) worth of aircraft orders scince last year, when 1413 were sold. In addition to this urgent condition, with strikes by the labor union, supply of the new 767 model have been postponed, having an influence on future orders.

Israel Defiant, UN Secretary General Disappointed

UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon today called Israeli Prime Minister Olmert to "express disappointment" regarding the continuing battles despite the UN Security Council resolution for a comprehensive cease fire in the Palestinian city of Gaza.

According to the UN press office, Ki Moon stated directly to Mr, Olmert; "We are disappointed in the ignoring of the resolution amid continuing violence on the ground." He gave a similar message to Islamic Radical Group Hamas.

Also at a televised press conference, John Ging, Head of the UN Works and Relief Agency said that "Today we embraced the good news of the resolution but with passing time our expectations lower."

In 2008 Beer Sales, Suntory surpasses Sapporo to Number 3

In Beer Sales, Suntory Beer for the first time over came Sapporo Beer, ranking 3rd in overall market share.

This is the first time the beer has reached 3rd place since it entered the marketplace in 1963. The producing firm also reached profitability for the first time.

Regarding the previous year's sale achievements, Suntory increased sales by 9.3% or 59,590,000 cases (1 case=20 large bottles) for a large spike.

Until September of 2008, It was the only one of the 4 major canned good firms to not mark up price, a cost cutting measure to accommodate consumer demand. On the other hand, Premium Beer, The Premium Malt becoming more exclusive, it has caused a certain "bi polarization" amongst consumers of high grade commodities.

In contrast, Sapporo fell 8.5% or 56,300,000 cases. Asahi and Kirin Beers announced their sales records in September but Asahi looks to maintain it's number one spot.

Europe Sends Investigation Team To Russia, Ukraine Due to Gas Shutoff

With Europe affected by Russia closing it's Ukraine routed gas supply, EU Commission Chairman Barroso has announced deployment of a team of investigators to monitor the situation to get to the root of the problem on the 7th,

Regarding the influence of the gas supply, Russia has said "Ukraine dealt the finishing blow to the pipelines". Ukraine has said, "Russia is hording the gas". Both are in disagreement on the root cause. Mr, Barrsoso stated that the investigators aim was the quick restoration of European Gas supply and that "The antagonist in this conflict is no concern to us". The EU for it's part, has pointed out that Ukraine, which wants to join the EU "Should not be an obstacle in Europe obtaining gas, if it wants membership".

Russian President Medvedev and Ukrainian President Yuschenko phoned each other after the 7th. Itarr Tass News Agency declared that President Medvedev stated that a contract, delineating the gas has to be bought at European Market Price (not at a discount) is required. Ukraine meanwhile, calls that "embezzlement" and demands immediate correspondence to normalize the situation.

Russian Natural Gas Firm Gazprom has halted it's Ukraine routed gas supply line to Europe on the 7th.

Russian State Television reports that on the 1st, it halted gas supplies to Ukraine because of their breakdown in 2009 price negotiations. It said that the urgent measure was taken to prevent the "stealing" of gas.

Eight European Countries receive Russian gas via gas lines which run through Ukraine but over 10 have been affected by the halt of supply. With places like Bulgaria having trouble providing steam for central heating, affected supply companies are already feeling the pinch.

Due to the hurling of a shoe at President Bush by an Iraqi Journalist, A Turkish company which manufactures the shoes has received a flood of orders (370,000 pairs) for the same type. They've also decided to trademark the footwear as "Bye Bye Bush Shoes" for sale.

That company which on the 23rd in this paper said, "14 days since the incident occurred we have received a flood of orders not just from the Middle East, but the West, Brazil and Taiwan among other places. I don't know whether we support or condone the journalist's actions but they have been a godsend in the face of a recession."

In the Middle East, 20,000 pairs are on sale, however, those are ones sold under "urgent demand" from the world abroad. The shoes are made of leather, each shoe weighing 600 grams. Wholesale price is at 2400 Japanese Yen. The shoes thrown in the incident were imported, but were definitely made by the company.

On the other hand, the said journalists court date is on the 31st. If convicted, the maximum penalty would be 15 years in prison.

According to an official report by America's CNN Television, over 75% surveyed were "delighted" by the retirement of President Bush as per an public opinion poll.

With the prolonged Iraq war and deteriorating economy, Bush received abysmal ratings from the American Public. In comparison, those asked the same question about President Clinton yielded a number of 51%, 24% lower than Bush.

28% said that Bush was "History's Worst President", while over 40% said he was a weak president according to the survey. Those saying he was a good president stand at 31%. His approval rating of 28% was the worst of recent memory.

33% said they would like to see public appearances of the president following retirement, down 22 points compared to Clinton. The survey was administered during December 19-21st with 1,013 citizens participating.

トヨタ全国内工場停止 (ビジネス)

Toyota Closes Plants Nationwide for 11 Days in Feb., March to Reduce Production

On the 6th, Toyota Automotive intends to reduce production by closing all 12 nationwide plants for 11 days during the months of Feburary and March. Due to the worldwide economic slowdown and slumping sales, it will decrease it's production stockpile by trimming manufacturing. Toyota Automotive Kyushu said; "We will comply with Toyota's aims", signaling the possiblity of further production cuts across the entire enterprise.

The Targets are 4 body asssembly plants and 8 accessory and part plants, both in the Chuubu prefecture. Plants will be closed during Feburary 5th, 6th, 13th and 20th which are weekdays and the 14th and 21st which are Saturdays. In March, they will be closed the weekdays of the 2nd and 13th and the Saturdays of the 14th and 21st. They will also be closed the 20th, which falls on a national holiday but was scheduled to be open.

In the month of November, Toyota Goods Sales stood at 8,240,000 units, down 800,000 compared with the month of May. Including the sales of Toyota brand and luxury brand cars (i.e. Lexus), the company will reduce worldwide production of 7,920,000 by 950,000 units. However with the economic crisis is worsening, the company announced in December that they will be forced to even further reduce production by 70,000 units.

In January, with the exception of Parts Manufacturor Teihou Factory, the 11 plants will close for 3 days. Toyota Automotive, including it's Kyushu branch is beginning to enforce the measure.

On the 5th, The Bush family announced that it's pet cat, India, died as of the 4th at the White House. It was 18 years old. The cause of death was not publicly announced. To the Bushes it was a sad bit of news amongst their departure from the White House.

India was a female American Shorthair, named for an athlete of the MLB Texas Rangers team of which Bush was a co-owner. The White House reported that "The Bushes are deeply saddened by the death of India".

Barack Obama emphasises Economic Stimulus Plan in Weekly Radio Address.

In President Elect Obama's weekly radio address on the 3rd, he said that "If immediate and urgent actions are not taken, the economy will continue to weaken and we will only face heightened unemployment in the 2nd quarter." He underscored his yet unimplemented economic recovery and reinvestment plan.

On the 5th, Mr. Obama met with Democratic and Republican party leaders in order to work out his economic recovery plan. The plan which approached the staggering sum of $800,000,000,000, including tax cuts is said to "not only create jobs in the short term but also fortify economic and competitive growth in the long term."

Important points mentioned were;
1. To double renewable energy production
2. To strengthen public utilities such as roads and highways
3. Accelerating the computerization of the health care system

Mr. Obama and Democrats aim to implement the economic measure, thought to create 3,000,000 new jobs, immediately following the new administration's opening on the 20th. However, Republicans anxious about the exploding budget deficit urge caution on the enormous economic measure. From the inaugural week's opening, deliberation would begin at full force.

Ground Victims toll at 70, Violent Struggle for Gaza Continues

As of the 5th, the Israeli Army is continuing attacks on radical Islamic party Hamas in the Palestinian area of Gaza. With Hamas in resistance, the violent battle carries on. Due to ever increasing civilian causalities, French President Nicolas Sarkozy visited with Israel in the West Bank as part of a delegation in search for a comprehensive ceasefire.

As per the AP News Agency, according to the Israeli Army; As of the 5th, 16 civilians were reported dead due to the attacks in Gaza, at least 10 were children. According to Gazan Health Officials, as of the 3rd, over 80 residents were killed due to violence outbreaks, around 70 of them ordinary civilians. AFP News Agency writes that as of the beginning of aerial bomb attacks of December 27th, the Gazan civilian death toll was at least 520 with 90 of those children, in addition to 5,200 wounded.

According to the Israeli Army, after ground attacks commenced, 1 Israeli soldier was killed with 30 wounded as of the 3rd. AFP reports that number to be 55 wounded. According to Reuters News Agency, Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak stated on the 5th; "We have dealt a devastating blow to Hamas but are yet to achieve our objective. Operations will continue." This suggests that ground level operations will continue in the long term.

Information on the ground reveals that by the 5th, Israeli tanks will have encircled the north of Gaza. Witnesses say that Israeli soldiers have continued shooting from building rooftops.

Sarkozy met with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on the afternoon of the 5th. According to the French President, he has visited with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and temporary Israeli Premier Ehud Olmert. On the 6th, he visited Syria and Lebanon. However with Hamas personnel absent from the meetings, some call the efficiency of such summits into question.

After conferring with the EU delegation, Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livini gave a press conference regarding the Gaza conflict. "We are at war with terror" she said, expressing a rejection of the EU suggested comprehensive ceasefire.
